Have you
ever thought that fallen logs can be given life again? Many people just leave
the fallen logs since they have nothing to do with them. But, we found an
incredible man who does things in a rather different way.
He is the
Japanese wood carving artist Mori Kono who utilized fallen alder, yellow and red
cedar, and birch wood to detailed animal sculptures. Kono and his team (MK
carving & sculpting, based in Abbotsford, BC, Canada) give realistic look
to the animal sculptures to show as if they're crawling trees or positioned in
wooden logs.
You can
visit his official website MK Carving and Sculpting if you are more interested
in his creations. He has an excellent talent to create high-quality carvings
according to his customers' will. The carving team always accepts commissioned
projects for private clients, though large or small. Besides, the team creates
mantels, totem poles, wood signs as well as centerpieces for hotel lobbies.

Mori Kono
uses a set of power tools and a small chisel for sculpture. The features of the
sculptures such as eyes, furs, and feathers are highlighted by the addition of
colors. The studio intends to incorporate natural beauty using wood carvings
for people to appreciate more.
“If our
completed works of art can contribute to society, to have a deeper feeling and
respect towards nature and the wild,” says the team, “then that is our greatest
dream!”

The
principal mission of the studio can be seen on its website.
“Our main
mission is to bring out, or back, the wondrousness of nature to this busy
modern world. All living things in this world exist and accept every rule of
mother nature… living in balance. If our completed works of art can contribute
to society – to have a deeper feeling and respect towards nature and the wild
more often, then that is our greatest dream!”

As said
earlier, Kono uses a lot of tools to create the final design in his mind. The
handheld small chisel is used to get the delicate details such as eyes, fur,
feathers in his sculptures. As soon as he finishes the basic part he brings
life to it by adding colors to make sure these animals stand out from the
pale-colored logs.
