Reflecting on her experience filming the iconic drama that catapulted her to fame, Anderson shared insights in a 2010 interview with Pop Entertainment. She remarked, “I’m lucky that there even was a character to play, because in the book, there isn’t much of one. Laura [Ingalls, author of the Little House novels] was a much older woman when she wrote the books. She was recalling the best moments of her life. The characters of Ma and Mary didn’t feature prominently. There was a lot of Laura and Pa, Laura and Jack the dog, and Laura and Mr. Edwards, but not much of Mary. I’m fortunate that they discovered I could act.”

After her portrayal of Mary Ingalls, Melissa Sue Anderson explored other minor roles before ultimately marrying television producer Michael Sloan in 1990. In 2002, the couple, along with their two children, daughter Piper and son Griffin, relocated to Montreal.
