Meghan
Markle and Prince Harry recently visited Nigeria for the Invictus Games
Anniversary celebrations, but Meghan’s wardrobe choices during the trip sparked
criticism. Many felt her dresses were too revealing for the visit, considering
them inappropriate for an African nation. Additionally, her comment referring
to Nigeria as "my country" added to the controversy.
Throughout
the three-day visit, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, wore several high-end
brands such as Carolina Herrera, Altuzarra, and Johanna Ortiz. Her wardrobe
changes, which reportedly cost a total of £120,000 ($153,104) including jewelry
and new clothing items, drew backlash from many observers.
Meghan’s
statement about having 43% Nigerian heritage and calling Nigeria "my
country" faced criticism as well. Critics highlighted the contrast between
her expensive wardrobe and the widespread poverty in Nigeria, where over 112
million people live below the poverty line.
Fans
of the royal family were particularly displeased with Meghan’s attire choices.
Many commented that her outfits, especially for school visits, were too
revealing and did not align with the cultural modesty expected, especially when
meeting children.
Overall,
Meghan’s dress choices during the trip were seen by some as disrespectful and
inappropriate for the setting.
